Types of COVID Tests

To give you an idea of what will happen during a test, here are some details about the tests you mostly hear on the news and COVID-19 updates.

RNA or PCR Test

This is also called molecular test, which is the most sensitive in detecting an active infection with a highly accurate result. If you are doing the COVID test for a job, the PCR test is the most recommended. This is done by using a specialized swab to collect saliva or mucus from your nose or throat. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is a technique used to identify a certain virus’s genetic material. Turnaround time will take a day or two because the sample will be analyzed and sent to an outside lab.

Rapid Test

Scientifically known as the antigen test, this one is mostly used in testing a lot of people. These test results are quicker than the PCR test; thus, the term ‘rapid.’ As with the PCR test, our healthcare workers will get a sample for testing by swabbing the back of your nose or throat. The only difference is you’ll get the result within an hour or so. This test detects specific proteins from the virus. Although it is highly accurate, this test might potentially miss an active infection, so you’ll need to proceed with molecular testing to clear out the false-negative result.

Serology or Blood Test

Also known as an antibody test, this type detects antibodies to the virus. Antibodies are protective proteins from our immune system that are produced to fight off our body’s foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. Antibodies are detectable within several days after infection. So when you test positive from this test, it doesn’t mean that you’re infected with COVID-19 since it will not detect active infections. This is recommended for at least 14 days after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
